Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing has said there is "no conflict" between Scottish and British people after the term 'Scolympian' was used to describe Scottish Olympians and Paralympians.

Mrs Laing was speaking during Scottish Questions in the House of Commons when MPs congratulated Andy Murray on his Olympic singles gold medal and his first Grand Slam title winning the US Open.

Sir Menzies Campbell (North East Fife) said the 'Scolympian' term coined by the Scottish First Minister appeared rapidly to have fallen into disuse.

He said he was not aware of any Scottish competitors selected either for the Olympics or Paralympics, or any medallist in either games, complaining that they were representing the United Kingdom, not Scotland.

Mrs Laing said there is "no conflict between being Scottish and being British" adding that "millions of reasonable people in the UK and all over the world live happily as both".

Secretary of State for Scotland Michael Moore MP said Murray's achievements were being celebrated the length and breadth of the country.

Supporting the views of Mrs Laing, Mr Moore said: "She is absolutely right. I am sure that people across the House will accept that being Scottish and being British - all these things - can be done at the same time."
